NYSCEC Breaking News: Proposal Deadline Extended & Featured Speaker: Keith Jones
Dear Colleagues,

Just a quick note to let you know that we have extended to JUNE 30 the deadline for submitting your proposal for consideration as a speaker at this year's NYSCEC Convention.  Click here <jeff insert link> for proposal information.

Also, exciting news!  Our featured speaker will be Keith Jones from the film "Including Samuel." The film "Including Samuel" won the EXCELLENCE AWARD at Superfest,  the International Disability Film Festival.  You can watch the interview from ABC's Good Morning America here:

Including Samuel CC
Producer: Dan Habib
Director: Dan Habib
Contact: Dan Habib danhabib@comcast.net
How can you achieve full inclusion for a child with a disability? Journalist turned filmmaker Dan Habib admits that until his son, Samuel, was born with cerebral palsy, that question had never crossed his mind. Together with his wife and older son, Isaiah, he sets out to learn how to make it easier for Sam to join in family activities, school and their community, discovering that inclusion is an ongoing experiment across the fields of special education, education and disability rights. Including Samuel is the first good, in-depth cinematic look at what is working within the relatively new pragmatic applications of the inclusion philosophy. Habib deftly enriches his film's landscape with articulate experts, experienced disability rights proponents, and diverse role models, including one woman who did not benefit from inclusion, without ever losing focus that the heart and soul of this story is the promise and potential of one irrepressible child, Samuel Habib.

Dear Colleague:

The New York State Federation of Chapters of Exceptional Children (NYS CEC)
will be celebrating our 55th Anniversary at Turning Stone Resort in Verona,
New York on November 7-8, 2008. New York State CEC is the largest CEC unit
with over 3,000 members.

Our latest issue of Exceptional Individuals has been somewhat delayed and
you may not have received it, hence this memo.

I wanted to let you know that the deadline for proposals has been extended
to June 30th. In that issue was a call for proposals. I encourage each and
every one of you to submit a proposal.  Please visit www.nyscec.org for
details.

We have an exciting agenda as well as a Gala on Friday evening to honor our
past presidents. You are cordially invited to this historic event in the
field of Special Education in New York State. Our convention will focus on
identifying current research and practices in inclusion, co-teaching,
collaboration, response to intervention, transition, and classroom-based
strategies across exceptionalities. During the NYS CEC 2008 Convention,
general education and special educators will have the opportunity to expand
their professional skills while networking with other professionals across
New York State. For further information about the convention, please go to
our website at www.nyscec.org. We have also attached a special edition of
our state journal, Exceptional Individuals.

We are pleased to announce our keynote speaker for Friday, November 7, 2008.
Mr. Keith Jones is President and CEO of SoulTouchin' Experiences. As an
African American community activist and entrepreneur with cerebral palsy,
Mr. Jones is a strong advocate for independent quality living in the
community. He has participated actively in various issues that face people
with disabilities. Mr. Jones is also extremely active in multi-cultural,
cross-disability education and outreach efforts. He has been recognized for
his emerging leadership by the state of Massachusetts and President's
Commission for Employment for People with Disabilities. Most recently Mr.
Jones was recognized by the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, with
the 2006 Moro Fleming Consumer Involvement Award as well as, a graduate of
the inaugural class of Initiative for Diversity in Civic Leadership. Mr.
Jones' life was recently highlighted in the DVD Including Samuel
(www.includingsamuel.com).

If you have any questions or are able to support our conference, please
contact Sharon Raimondi (raimonsl@yahoo.com), President-Elect, or Laurie
DuBos (Ldubos@cnr.edu).  We look forward to seeing you in November!

Sincerely,

David Grapka
