About the NYSCEC 2017 Convention

The NYSCEC Annual Convention is the largest professional gathering of educators in the field of special education. It is a showcase for ground-breaking, innovative studies in a diverse array of areas - from early education through higher education, from digital learning to best practices for any classroom. This is your one stop source to encounter ideas and research that will shape tomorrow's education practices and policies, and where to connect with leading thinkers from the New York State area.

Friday's Keynote Speaker: Jennifer Grief Green, PhD:

Jennifer Greif Green is an Associate Professor of Special Education in the School of Education at Boston University and a child clinical psychologist. Dr. Green completed her doctorate at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to joining BU, she trained at Yale School of Medicine and in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School. Her research focuses on school-based mental health services for students with emotional and behavioral disorders and, specifically, the role of teachers in identifying, supporting, and referring students, as one way to reduce disparities in mental health service access. Dr. Green also studies school bullying and co-leads the Social Adjustment and Bullying Prevention Laboratory at BU (www.bu.edu/bullying). She specializes in assessing bullying and determining how assessments can be used to inform school safety planning. She has collaborated with a number of school districts to provide feedback on student mental health and bullying experiences.

2017 NYSCEC Convention Theme

At the Confluence of Possibility and Progress

Improving outcomes for individuals with disabilities requires consideration of multiple factors, but overall should presume competence and assist them with progress towards their long-term goals. As family members and professionals, we need to advocate for resources that allow our students the possibility of reaching these goals. At the 2017 New York State Council for Exceptional Children Conference, sessions will focus on providing the information and resources to consider what is possible and to generate real progress for individuals with a wide range of disabilities.
