About Us
The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides continual professional development, advocates for newly and historically underserved individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice.

DEC and NAEYC Announce New Position on Early Childhood Inclusion
CEC’s Division for Early Childhood and the National Association for the Education of Young Children have released a position statement describing the desired results of inclusive experiences for children with and without disabilities and specifying how to identify high-quality programs and services.
CEC, Autism Society Team to Publish Competencies for Teaching Students with ASD
The new professional competencies for teaching students with autism spectrum disorders will speak clearly and unambiguously to the field and be incorporated into CEC’s primary resource on qualified teachers, What Every Special Educator Must Know.
CEC Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has leveled the playing field and improved the futures of children and youth with disabilities, but work must continue, including ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

CEC is the leading voice for special and gifted education. Through the vision and dedication of its nearly 45,000 members , CEC sets the standard for high quality education for children and youth with exceptionalities.
The Council ensures the needs of children and youth with exceptionalities are met in educational legislation, establishes professional standards for the field, and develops initiatives to improve special education practice. And, CEC is known as THE source for information, resources, and professional development for special educators.
